Amongst a host of green features, the building is designed to be climate responsive with net-zero energy consumption. The building will serve as a living laboratory for the School of Design & Environment. Apart from deploying solar panels with one of the world’s highest efficiency, SolarGy will apply their best engineering know-hows to maximize the output of the solar PV system to meet the specified annual energies. In line with BCA’s long term aspiration, we hope to see more net-zero, net-positive and super low-energy buildings.
The Jewel is an iconic mixed-use complex to be built at Singapore Changi Airport, serving as a central hub connecting T1, T2 and T3. It is a joint development project of Changi Airport Group and CapitaMalls Asia. Designed by the world renowned Safdie Architects, this signature lifestyle destination will offer aviation and travel-related facilities, a wide range of retail offerings, as well as unique leisure attractions, including a large-scale, lush indoor garden. The steel and glass structure building will consist of 5 storeys above ground and 5 basements.
Installing solar panels on this iconic building demands intimate knowledge of architectural integration, experience in the built environment and respect of aesthetics apart from sound engineering fundamentals.
The award of this 460 kWp solar project to SolarGy is a testimony of their forte in architectural integration of solar panels into the built environment - a very important aspect to enthuse Architects and Developers to adopt solar panels on a more extensive scale so as to have significant impact on carbon reduction.
SolarGy is excited about the opportunity to work alongside Safdie Architects and the project consultants to jointly develop innovative solutions that meet the demanding aesthetics and level of architectural detailing and at the same time meet the engineering requirements including energy performance target, reliability and maintainability requirements. Through the intensive design co-ordination sessions, SolarGy is confident to build new skills and capabilities, demonstrate true leadership in solar architectural integration and will be more well positioned to take on many more iconic projects to come.

We remain positive on the growth prospects of renewable energy especially within the next two years driven by initiatives and policies such as the proposed carbon tax in 2019, full retail contestability in 2018, the aspiration by BCA towards net positive and net zero energy buildings, SGX requirement on sustainability reporting, etc.
SolarGy is honoured to be selected by Singapore Institute of Power & Gas (a subsidiary of Singapore Power) to develop courseware and conduct training sessions on PV system design, installation and maintenance. The 2.5 days inaugural training session was very well attended by engineers and technical officers from Singapore Power. Since this is a topic at the hearts of the practitioners, the sessions were very lively and well received. The course was specially developed to focus on design and safety aspects based on CP5, SS601 and good engineering practice. It also covers EMA regulatory requirements and SP application procedures.
